This past Saturday night, July 19th, at the Arena Tecate in Tijuana, Mexico, three-time world title challenger Paulette “Heredera” Cuesta and former WBC super flyweight champion Guadalupe “Lupita” Martinez were awarded a draw after a grueling eight round clash. Cuesta (17-5-1, 4KO) of Tijuana was coming off a loss in December of 2024 while Mexico City’s Martinez (19-13-2, 6KO) scored another draw in her last fight back in August of last year.
The much anticipated fight was action filled from the opening bell to the last with Cuesta using lateral movement and superior footwork to land her attack while Martinez came straight forward. Cuesta had no trouble squaring up close and scoring with body shots to either side of Martinez’s torso. Despite of Cuesta’s efforts, Martinez was able to trap the hometown fighter against the ropes or corners and scoring her own attack.
Towards the second half of the fight the relentless pressure from Martinez began to take its toll on Cuesta with the Tijuana fighter slowing down and allowing for the visitor to score the more telling shots. Still Cuesta was able to close the contest scoring the better and more precise shots but it was not enough to award her the win. One judge saw it a lopsided 80-72 for Cuesta, another 77-75 for Martinez and the third an even 76-76.
